Trends will come and go. Lapels will be wide, then narrow. Certain colors will be “in” this fall and “out” next spring. “Must have” accessories will appear almost monthly.
Ignore this consumer merry-go-round. Dress in classic, traditional clothes.
And gentlemen, please remember: your sport or suit jacket should be long enough to cover your butt and your trousers should touch your shoes.

Lapel and tie widths have always confused both me and my husband. Our families have always purchased traditional clothing, but we do notice a difference in traditional widths of today, versus those of blazers my grandfather, and other family members, purchased decades ago. Same with ties. Is there a “standard” when it comes to these?
Thank you for the comment and the question. (And congratulations on having a legacy steeped in traditional clothing.) Traditional men’s jackets tend to have lapels that fold and lay halfway to the shoulder seam. If you go farther toward the shoulder than that, the jacket might scream of the 1970s (or 1930s), when lapels were wide. If the lapel is narrower than that, the jacket might seem too contemporary, or a fashion statement from the 1960s. I believe standard tie widths vary slightly between 3 inches and 3 1/2 inches. Through the ages, fashion does creep in to even the most traditional of styles. The good news is, if Grandfather’s jacket is a little out of fashion now, it will surely be back in style shortly. – BGT
