“Being male is a matter of birth. Being a man is a matter of age. But being a gentleman is a matter of choice.”
― Vin Diesel
It is being attributed as, ‘unknown’ on quote websites. Mr. Diesel must have said it in a movie or an interview to have it attributed to him. Still a great one.
Thanks, Melissa. Perfect. – BGT
I don’t know the source of that quote, but it reminds me of something I once heard. “A gentleman is someone who does the right thing even though no one would have known if he hadn’t.”
Great quote. Yes, the unobserved, the unrewarded. The simple deed for the simple reason: it’s the right thing to do. – BGT
These comments make me think of an interaction I heard long ago where a (woman) said to a (man) “ you don’t have to hold the door for me because I’m a lady “. The response was: “ I am not holding it because you are a lady. I am holding it because I am a gentleman “.
Perfect. Thanks, David. – BGT
An older credit is given to Edwin Louis Cole (1922–2002) founder of the Christian Men’s Network, an American religious organization devoted to helping Christian men and fathers. He published many books and preached numerous sermons relating to men and religion. It has been credited to him as his take on 2 Corinthians 3:18 for men.
Thank you, Janet. – BGT
In general, being a gentleman is indeed a matter of choice. But, for Old Money in particular, isn’t it rather an obligation (“noblesse oblige”)?
Yes, it is obligatory to a certain class. A choice to the majority, hopefully one they’ll make in the affirmative. – BGT
