An Old Money Conversation

Recent conversation with an OMG about another. No friendship was going to happen, and the reason was stated with typical Old Money candor:

“So you met him?”

“I did.”

“What did you think?”

“I don’t get the impression he does anything.”

“I think he’s just clipping coupons right now.”

“Yeah, and I don’t like that. We can all do that, but we don’t do that. Lack of character. Lack of duty. Not to mention the example it sets for the kids.”

“I thought you two would hit it off.  Sorry.”

“No, not a big deal. We have a lot in common, but there’s something missing with the guy. It’s a flaw, is all I can say. And frankly, I don’t want to be around when idle time hatches some bad behavior. And it’s only a matter of time with him, or anybody. And what do you have to talk about if you’re not working? Another drink?”

“Sure. (long pause) You know I’m working, right?”

(Laughter.) “You’re a writer. We’re never sure about you guys.” (More laughter.)
